Background:
Rosette Christopher was born to a poor muggle family in America. She lost her parents at a very early age (to a war overseas) and made it her goal and priority in life to watch over and take care of her younger brother Joshua, who took the loss of their parents very hard. The Christopher siblings were not only very close in age, but also shared the same blonde hair and blue-eyed features. However, Joshua had serious health problems, many of which often caused him to fall into unpredecented coughing fits or seizures. Rosette, worried for her brother's safety and poor health, vowed on her parents graves that she would protect Joshua always and find a cure for his nameless illness.
Rosette and Joshua started to grow up together at the Seventh Bell orphanage in England (where they were sent after their parents' deaths), their very different personalities making a stark contrast even though they hardly spent any time apart at all. Rosette was incredibly loud and obstructive, causing chaos throughout the whole of the orphanage and often seen bossing the other children around and threatening to beat up anyone that harmed Joshua or managed to tick her off. She was never afraid to speak her mind - which often got her in trouble, and her way with words and actions made her out to be quite the tomboy and earned her many less-than-desirable nicknames from the other kids (particularly the boys). Joshua, on the other hand, was rather quiet and shy. He lived most of his days indoors reading and dealing with his health problems, wishing he could go outside and play with the other children more often, but being instructed to stay inside and recover. Rosette spent as much time with him as she could, desperately hoping for a way to help him in his suffering, but found she couldn't do much more than hold his hand and simply be there for him. Frustrated and angry with herself for not being able to do anything useful for her brother, Rosette resolved that she'd grow up and learn to become a doctor.
At the age of eleven, a surprised Rosette received her letter from Hogwarts by owl while she was outside playing tag with some of the other orphanage children. Curious as to why an owl would approach her (much less carrying a letter) the young Christopher girl took the offered parcel and hastily tore it open, her blue eyes going wide as she read over the unfamiliar print. Wasting no time after finishing, she grasped the paper tightly in her hands and ran straight back inside the orphanage, making a beeline for Joshua's room. Carelessly throwing the door open with a wide and excited grin, Rosette declared that she had the solution to his problems and victoriously waved the paper clenched in her hand. However, it took her a moment to realize that Joshua's room was already quite occupied: There was an unknown man and woman standing next to the lady in charge of the orphanage and Joshua was seated on his bed, dressed up in a hat and coat, a small peice of luggage sitting on the floor beside him. When he looked up at her, Rosette froze, not recognizing the expression he was wearing on his face - it was defiant, somber, and very determined.
"Rosette, I've been adopted. And... I'm going to go. I'll make you proud someday so you won't have to pity me and feel held back by me anymore. I'll become a man and stand on my own two feet and I'll...be the one to protect you! So wait for me, sister!"
After Joshua left, Rosette became unsure of herself. She thought she'd found the answer to their problems with the school of magic, where she felt she could surely learn magic that could cure her brother once and for all. And now that Joshua was gone, she thought it had all just been some cruel joke played on her by the other orphanage kids, perhaps out of spite for a time she'd told them off or having caused some sort of bodily harm. Thus she was surprised when a different owl visited her again, carrying the same sort of letter. Finally accepting that it wasn't fake (and that staying at the orphanage didn't matter without her brother there), Rosette decided to attend Hogwarts and left for the school as soon as the first opportunity arose.
Although poor in classes and lacking of a decent attention span, Rosette went through five years in Hogwarts, excelling only mainly in Defense Against the Dark Arts and Charms. She struggled through Potions classes, which she put most of her effort into, as she still held the heartfelt desire and promise to help her brother and find the cure for his sickness. And although the class was actually her worst in terms of performance, she refused to give it any less attention no matter how many times she blew up concoctions in her cauldron or worse. Overall, Rosette made herself impossible to miss in the distinct school. Despite being muggleborn and slowly learning more about wizards and the life attached to being one, she never dared let anyone bully her (or others of similar parentage or differences) and periodically got into trouble or recieved detentions for losing her cool and hexing another student who managed to blow her top (which wasn't terribly difficult to achieve in the first place).
And underneath it all she kept her vow close to her heart, never willing to turn her back on her brother and her promise, no matter how slim the chance was that they might meet again. She wanted to be ready for that day and to face her brother again - to tell him what she hadn't had the opportunity to before he'd been taken away: it wasn't pity that drove her all those years ago, but love. Love of a sister for her brother. Love that never faded no matter how far apart they were torn.
